What Is a “Specialist GP”?

You might notice we use the term “specialist GP” rather than just “GP.” This is a shift the whole profession has made in New Zealand in recent years, not something we’ve come up with ourselves.

Becoming a specialist GP means completing a Fellowship of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (FRNZCGP): three years of dedicated training on top of six years of medical school and years more of hospital work, entirely focused on general practice as its own speciality. The College adopted the term “specialist GP” to make that training visible, since the old title didn’t say anything about the years of extra study behind it.

Dr Longman at Kendal Medical Centre is a specialist GP, and we’re also an accredited training practice with the College, helping the next generation of doctors (Dr Kuruppu included) work towards the same qualification.
